01 DEFEATS 06 IN BATTLEOF THE SUPER TEAMS
01 overcame their first deficit in this tournament
and held on to edge the 2006 team in overtime 35-28 in the title
game. First quarter was scoreless as both teams were unable to move the
ball and played field position. 2001 struck first on a Brandon Janco
scramble for a 19 yard touchdown which capped a 64 yard drive. Big play
in the drive was a Janco to Patrick Turner 41 yard pass just over the
outstretched arms of Michael Rogan. Extra point good made it 7-0.
2006 answered when linebacker Shantz Medley
intercepted a Janco pass and returned it 12 yards to midfield. 7 plays
later Reece Lovell's two yard touchdown run tied the scored 7-7 with the
successful extra point. That was score at the half.
Medley took a screen pass 38 yards behind a key block
from Quinton Groves with 9:31 remaining in the 3rd quarter to give 06
the lead at 14-7. 01 answered with a 80 yard drive as Chase Eakes
punched it through from 6 yards out. That tied the game at 14-14 with
4:21 remaining in the 3rd Quarter. Marcus Buggs intercepted a Coleman
Stroud pass and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown that erupted the
crowd. Extra point was successful and 01 regained the lead at 21-14 with
only 1:21 left in the 3rd quarter. Early in the 4th quarter 01 Ryan
Batey drilled Tracey Mayes attempting to return a punt and the ball is
recovered by 01 Charlie Minchey. 01 was in business at the 06 fifteen
yard line. Janco hit Patrick Turner on a 15 yard fade route for a
touchdown that made it 27-14. Extra point was good and 01 leads 28-14
with 10:21 to play in the game.
06 put together the best drive of the night going 80
yards on 12 plays. Reece Lovell punched the touchdown across from the 3
yard line and the Nabors extra point cut the deficit to 28-21.
Unfortunately for 2006 the drive only left 3:39 on the clock. The 06
defense got the stop and the offense took over at their own 42. Two
incompletions and one sack later left 06 facing 4th and 19 at their own
33 yard line with only 1:44 remaining. Ben Cunningham took a sweep 59
yards to the 2001 eight yard line. Michael Rogan scored from the 8 yard
line with under one minute remaining to send the crowd into a
frenzy. The successful extra point tied the game at 28-28. 01 took a
knee to play the OT.
06 won the toss and deferred. 01 scored on their 3rd
play as Brandon Janco took the QB sneak in from the 2 yard line. Extra
point was good and 01 regained the lead at 35-28. Now it was 06 turn in
OT. Reece Lovell took the first carry to the 2 yard line. Two more
Lovell carries lost yardage . It all came down to this. Facing 4th and
four and the game on line QB Coleman Stroud rollled out but was stuffed
by Marcus Buggs for a loss and the 2001 fans rushed the field to
celebrate. What a game!
